Welcome to REELpoetry/HoustonTX 2019

REELpoetry/HoustonTX is three days with more than 50 films including cinepoetry, documentaries and videos from local, national and international filmmakers, poets and artists. Catch screenings of U.S. premiers, films by previous prize winners, and videos of homegrown performance poets. You’ll also find talks, a workshop and a panel discussion scattered throughout, as well as live poetry performances. It’s an occasion to network and socialize with creative people who combine film and poetry in distinctive ways. It’s a place to adjust your expectations, to wrap your mind around potentialities, to consider what poetry and film are capable of and to stretch beyond the boundaries where film and poetry intersect.

REELpoetry/HoustonTX is produced by Public Poetry.

In addition to REELpoetry/HoustonTX, Public Poetry’s signature programs include a monthly a poetry reading series at libraries throughout Houston; the Poetry Ride, a yearly trip to the Round Top Poetry Festival on with a poetry workshop on the coach journey; the PM Show – Poets & Musicians, a rehearsed creative collaboration resulting in a live 90-minute stage show; and, an annual nation-wide contest with a $1000 prize plus anthology publication.

Public Poetry has also presented five museum programs at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and The Menil Collection, published ARTlines: ART BECOMES POETRY, facilitated “Ex Libris” poetry podcasts and essays, offered occasional talks and workshops, organized a scavenger hunt with poetry clues, sponsored a cutting-edge performance festival that included poetry, brought poetry to dance parties, and got former US Poet Laureate, Robert Pinsky, to launch his internationally acclaimed Favorite Poem Project for our city.

Cumulatively since 2011, our collaborative programs and projects have put over 200 poets in front of thousands of people. We present combinations of established published poets, academics, performance poets and youth reading at the same event. We pay poets for the work they do with us. We promote the power of poetry in all things, connecting with the public and poetry community. Find out more at www.publicpoetry.net
